REAL GAMES - ANIMANIACS

YAY!  I just hit the 200+ mark on followers AND I get to play a decent game.  Today is a good day.

Animaniacs, for those of you too young to know, was one of the best cartoons in the 90's.  One of the reasons why it was so good was due to the fact that they had basically free reign.  No topic was taboo, and the risky humor constantly made it past the censors.  When you combine amazing writers with no restraints, great animation, and amazing voice work...what you get is one entertaining cartoon.  And if you combine all of that with Konami and the Super Nintendo, what you get is a pretty good game.

Hellooooo Nurse!
As we start the game, we are shown a short story with Pinky and the Brain, followed by Yakko, Wakko, and Dot being hired to collect a script and eventually stop Pinky and the Brain.  This is the kind of stuff that I have come to expect from Konami.  It may not be the best, but they always put a lot of effort into the games.

The controls in this game take some getting used to.  Jump, stack, and dash.  It reminds me a lot of the Real Monsters game that I reviewed towards the beginning of this journey.  I wouldn't say that the controls are bad, but there is definitely a learning curve.

The music in this game is pretty good, but it can get annoying after a while.  They did a good job with the Animaniacs theme, as well as the others, such as Pinky and the Brain.  The sound effects are decent, but nothing too impressive.

The graphics are straight from the cartoon.  The sprites and stage design are executed perfectly.  If you liked the goofy art style of the cartoon, then you will like the style of this game as well.

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.  That is how I feel about this game.  I didn't see or hear anything bad, so I can't talk shit.
My only real problem with this game is the gameplay itself.  Animaniacs is a platformer, but the stages are set up like a Beat 'em Up.  It's an interesting idea, but it makes for an annoying experience.  Every single death that I had while playing this game was due to this crappy perspective nonsense.  If this had been either a platformer or a beat 'em up, it would have been better off.  Combing the two will simply not work, not for the Super Nintendo game at least.

I was very skeptical of the Animaniacs game until I saw it was made by Konami. Konami always makes good stuff, and this game is no exception.  Animaniacs gets 4 Ralph the security guards out of 5.  (If you are watching the ending, there's a 2nd part after the credits roll)

I still have this for Genesis. This was a fun game, and I remember some of the stages were pretty damn hard to beat, and that Indiana Jones-esque level was sweet.

I'm glad it turned out to be a good game. It would have sucked to have the Animaniacs name ruined.
